Socit / Politique : "ISS"

The International Space Station serves as a symbol of international cooperation. It has been built in several countries and occupied by various nationalities. While on the space station the astronauts bond closely and must work together and trust each other with their lives. The are away from all the tension and war in the world. This is somewhat symbolic of a peaceful cooperative world.
However, it could be argued that a huge portion of the world has been left out. South America and Africa are not represented at all. As far as I know Japan is the only Asian country generally represented. And it could be further said that European/North American and wealthy nations are vastly overrepresented (in large part because they are the nations that can afford the endeavor).
So, do you think the ISS is a great step forward for mankind or is it just more of the same but in space this time? Should we take further steps to incorporate other nations? Is it merely another issue of national pride and Northern domination by putting the flags of wealthy nations in outer space? Is it too obscure to even matter?

If you have read this far it would be great to here from you. Answer one or more question or just put in your own comments and let us know what you think!

Simon,
I liked your response a lot. It seems that it is a goal that all countries can strive together for. Hopefully many countries will be able to join in on this shared dream so we can achieve peace at least in space. I really like how there is only one International Space Station instead of space stations for various countries or alliances.

I hope your country is able to achieve its goal.

(My English isn't good)
I think ISS is a good and useful structure, although my country don't join in that yet. It can symbolise the wealth of European and N.American countries, but also it can be a goal to the country that don't join in that yet. and it could be a symbol of peace, too. As for my country, although we dislike Japan, we envied the technology of Japan. They sended a space probe, and even they sended an astronaut. So we always wanted to send a space probe. Yesterday, we built a space centre in Naro Island, Republic of Korea by ourselves. So we could say we achieve our goal 50%. We're going to send a space probe until 2025.
So, In my opinion, ISS could encourage the country to set and achieve a goal. It's not a structure that symbolise the wealth and developed tech. It provides a goal to them.
