WELCOME!

This web site is dedicated to raising awareness for endangered animals. Each year 1000's of animals become endangered due to deforestation, poaching, pollution and other man-made factors that can easily be prevented with effort from the community. Help us to save these natural treasures by looking at our site and visiting the resources provided by selecting a page at the top of your screen.

Did you know that 38 known species of mammals that are extinct in the wild. However, of them there are some that are kept in captivity with scientists trying to save them from going extinct.

As of 2006, 253 fish-species were listed as critically endangered, 442 amphibian-species were listed as critically endangered.

81 species of animals are considered extinct or critically endangered, as well as endangered or vulnerable.

There are over 1,000 animal species that are endangered at varied levels, across the world.

The Problem

Animals are becoming endangered at a very scary rate. People aren’t treating animals right and are not aware so animals are becoming endangered. Our team feels that most people do not care or know about the problem and need to be taught about it and informed about the simple things that can be done to help.

Here are some ideas about the problem that the OHDELA Endangered Animals ThinkQuest Team brainstormed:

• Many people do not know how bad of an effect animals dying out is to their habitat.
• Animals play a part in their habitat and if they become extinct that could affect other animals and plants that live there.
• People produce a lot of trash and do not recycle which is not good for the environment and the animals in it.
• People continue building new homes and buildings when they could use the ones that are already built.
• Fuels from cars and factories are causing the greenhouse effect, so the polar ice caps are melting.
• Animals in polar regions are losing their homes.
• Animals are suffering.
• There are people who don’t know or care about the problem.

So, what is the solution?!? Click HERE to see how we can all help!

The Solution

The OHDELA Endangered Animals ThinkQuest site gives information about the endangered animals that we researched and has tried to show it a way that will interest students and people to know more about it. We have included simple things that even kids can do to help endangered animals. Our team thinks that raising awareness and giving simple things people can do will help to reduce the endangered animals’ problem. We have provided links to many sites and videos that will teach people about endangered animals and what they can do to help.

Here is a list of things that our team feels can be done to help endangered animals:

• Ride your bike and walk more to reduce pollution
• Don’t use products tested on animals
• Raise awareness about endangered animals
• Reduce, reuse, and recycle
• Get permission to hold fund raisers for nature preserves in your community
• Be happy with the house you are in or buy a house that is already built instead of building a new one
• Print on both sides of the paper
• Read newspapers online to save paper
• Make people think
• Give catchy sayings or slogans that make people think

We found a great list of 10 simple things you can do to help. Please take a look at allaboutwildlife.com to find out more!

Kyle and Emma's trip to the zoo!
On March 18, 2011, Kyle Channell and Emma Best visited the Columbus Zoo to conduct research on endangered animal species. Although the zoo houses and supports many endangered animals, we were only able to see koala bears, eastern barred bandicoots, Bengal tigers, and black rhinos. Of these, the black rhino is the most endangered. There are only 2,600 left in the world, and most of these are in zoos. Between 1970 and 1994, 95% of black rhinos were wiped out by poachers for their horns and tough skin.
There once were 8 tiger species, but 3 of these became extinct in the 20th century. Hunting and deforestation have reduced the remaining numbers of tigers to around 2,500.

Red pandas, which resemble raccoons, are about 42 inches long, including a long, bushy tail. They weigh between seven and 14 pounds. Their red-and-white markings blend in with the red mosses and white lichens that grow on the trees in which they live.Red pandas are endangered because of habitat loss. There are fewer than 2,500 adult red pandas.
5

The white rhino once roamed much of sub-Saharan Africa, but today is on the verge of extinction due to poaching fueled by these commercial uses. Only about 11,000 white rhinos survive in the wild, and many organizations are working to protect this much loved animal.
6

Native to the Central Asian mountains, the snow leopard is a rare sight, with only about 6,000 left in the wild. They are hunted for their beautiful, warm fur and for their organs, which are used in traditional Chinese medicine.
6

The bumblebee bat (or the Kitti's hog-nosed bat) may be the smallest mammal in the world, reaching only up to 33 mm and weighing only 1.7 to 2 grams, which is about the weight of a dime. It is found in Thailand (a more recent population has been found in Myanmar). The current population of this little guy is between 200 and 2000.

Black rhinos are large African animals that are critically endangered. There are only approximately 4,200 rhinos left surviving. Adult rhinos stand at 4-6 feet high, and they measure 10-12 feet in length. They also weigh between 1000-3000 pounds.

Rhinos are hunted by poachers for their horns. Between 1970 and 1994, 96% of black rhinos were wiped out by poachers. In addition to poaching, rhino populations are fragile because females only have a single calf every 2-3 years.

Tasmanian Devils also live in Tasmania along with the Forester Kangaroos. They are endangered because of Dingoes and other wild dogs. Tasmanian Devils are cousins to the Tasmanian Forester Kangaroos.8

Dugongs are found in the costal oceans of East Africa to Australia. They also can be found in the Red Sea, Pacific Ocean, and the Indian Ocean. Dugongs are easy targets for hunters. They are used for their meet, skin, oil, teeth, and bones. It is also number 7 of the top 10 endangered animals.6

Tasmanian Forester Kangaroos are found on an island called Tasmania off the coast of Australia. The population of these kangaroos has reduced 90% since the 1800s due to humans hunting their meet and the loss of habitat used for land expansion.9

Axolotls are wonderful in a way. They are like salamanders that spend all of their lives in the water. They are dying out because people have drained lakes and ponds. Research shows there are between 700 and 1,200 axolotls left in a few spread out places in central México. Axolotls have a regenerative property that makes them ideal pets and lab animals. I don’t agree that just because they have regenerative properties, they can be lab animals or pets. This is my motto: if they’re endangered don’t mess with ‘em.10

The takhi, or Przewalski's (sheh-val-skee) horse, is the only truly wild horse. They were extinct in the wild for many years until 2008, when their status was moved to critically endangered. The Przewalski's horse’s fur color is sandy or brown, with a pale belly and muzzle, dark tail and socks. They stand 13 hands tall from the shoulder. Adults have a weight of 550 to 750 pounds. Before the population went extinct in the wild, they lived in Germany, Ukraine, Poland, Belarus, Lithuania, Kazakhstan, Russia, Mongolia, and China. Currently there are 1,500 in zoos and breeding stations, and 400 in Mongolia and China.11

The Amur Leopard is an extremely rare species, with only approximately 40 left in the world. These cats only live in the northern forests of eastern Russia. They once lived in China and Korea but are now extinct in those countries. Their habitat is threatened by logging and poaching, as well as climate change. The Amur Leopard is considered one of the most beautiful of the large cats with a long coat of fur, making it able to survive in harsh conditions. Its beautiful coat also makes it desirable to poachers however.12

Bald Eagles were listed as endangered between 1965 and 1995. In 1995 their status was upgraded to threatened. Their numbers had steadily declined before 1965 due to habitat destruction, loss of food sources, and use of pesticides, specifically DDT. DDT caused the egg shells of baby eagles to be too thin and also for adult eagles to be infertile. Almost half of the eagle population is in Alaska.13

The Raptor Research Project maintains a continuous stream video of an eagle’s nest in Decorah, Iowa. The RRP is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and strengthening raptor populations through education and nest site management.

The Woylie lives on the Southern side of Australia. It is endangered because of the clearing of its habitat and from all of its predators.14

Kakapos are native to New Zealand. There are only 120 Kakapos left in the world. Kakapos are endangered because of predators. It also can’t survive because of loosing its habitat. The kakapo is number 2 of the top 10 endangered animals.15

Numbats are native to South West Australia. They are endangered because of loosing their habitat and from predators.16

Californian Condor
Californian condors are huge with a Wingspan of 8.2-9.7 feet (2.5-2.95 meters)! Their weight is 17 to 29 pounds (7.7 to 13 kilograms). Wow! This will knock your socks off: a Californian condor can live 60 years. That’s nearly as long as a human’s life time! You may know that Californian condors are vultures, so you may think they’re messy. Actually, they are quite neat. They wash regularly and clean themselves after they eat. They are called thunderbirds by Native Americans, because in their tradition, the flapping of their huge wings brings thunder. According to the San Diego Zoo, there are 369 Californian condors left in 2011, so they are critically endangered.

ENDANGERED AMPHIBIANS

Did you know that one out of three amphibians is at risk of extinction?

It’s true, and the most known causes are habitat destruction, habitat fragmentation, and habitat degradation. These include environmental estrogens, climate change and diseases. Some of the amphibians that have gone endangered are the Western Nimba Toad that lives in Guinea, Ivory Coast, is due to habitat loss and degradation also due to the mining, and the Red-banded Poison Frog, in Colombia, due to Overexploitation for pet trade and habitat destruction.

Some things to consider, to help save these amphibians are instead of buying bottled water use a reusable bottle instead. When it is a little chilly in your home instead of turning the heat up put a sweater on. If you have somewhere to go instead of getting into a car think (less than a mile, bike in style). In nice weather why not hang your clothes out to dry. You can do little things to help save the amphibians and the big, beautiful earth we call home. Instead of throwing away food that you might not eat, find a farmer with chickens and/or pigs and let the animal benefit. You not only would help cut down on garbage but you could save the farmer money on food. You could also make a compost bin.

If we all made an effort to change a little maybe we could save a lot.

Hi! I’m Amy Toney. My favorite color (as of now; it changes) is blue. I’m not a huge fan of pink and purple. My favorite animal is horses. I absolutely love them!! But I like all animals. I like all of the seasons, but I especially like fall and spring, except for the bugs.

My main jobs in my thinkquest team were building the website, designing the home page (by the way hope you like it), and making the games. My thinkquest experience was really cool. It taught me that if I want to get something done, I have to turn off the TV and crack down on it. It was hard but it is so cool to see the website I and my team made. I really like this topic because as you read in the paragraph above I like animals.

My name is Kyle Channel.I'm a 10 year old 4th grade student at OHDELA. My favorite subjects in school are math and social studies. When not in school, I enjoy theatre, singing, dancing, and playing sports. I enjoyed learning about endangered animals. I love outdoor activities and being with nature.

My name is Peter Fike. I’m a 4th grade student at OHDELA (Ohio Distance and Electronic Learning Academy). This is my second year going to internet school. It’s great to go to OHDELA because I learn a lot from the awesome teachers there, but I also stay in the comfort of my home. My favorite sport is wrestling, favorite color is green, and my favorite animal is the Alligator. This year I competed in wrestling tournaments at Ottawa, Bluffton, and Bath, Ohio. I love ThinkQuest. I like working with other kids from all over Ohio. I also like how challenging it is. I helped research endangered animals. I learned that there are many, many species of animals that are endangered. This has been a great opportunity.

My name is Emma Best. I am 10 years old. I live in a small town north of the capital city Columbus Ohio.

I love to dance. I dance 8 hours a week, and take voice, piano, and guitar lessons. I often perform in local plays, and I enjoy going to the theatre. I also have auditioned for Broadway shows in New York. I have been so close to getting one, and hope to be singing and dancing on the wonderful Broadway stage some day!

I have enjoyed being a part of the Think Quest Team and getting to know all of the kids involved as well. My job as a reporter enables me to have fun collecting information from the zoo and places outside the classroom!

Mrs. Spencer

I am the gifted coordinator at OHDELA, Ohio Distance and Electronic Learning Academy, and have been lucky to have the opportunity to work with five ThinkQuest teams during the 2010-2011 school year comprised of students in grade 2 through grade 8. I started teaching in 1994 and have been involved with gifted education for thirteen years in a variety of rolls: gifted liaison, gifted center teacher, gifted resource teacher, and gifted coordinator. I was searching for a unique forum that would suit the needs of our gifted learners at OHDELA and found ThinkQuest to be the perfect opportunity for us. I have loved seeing students at various grade levels move through the competition process with the opportunity to use their varied strengths and talents to complete the tasks. This process has helped students to develop communication skills, critical thinking ability, problem solving, and leadership which are invaluable skills for success in the global technological society of today. I am very excited that the students will have a lasting digital media product that they can continue to develop. I can’t say enough about the ThinkQuest competition process and the unique experience it has provided to our gifted students at OHDELA and look forward to competing again next year.

Endangered Species Act of 1973
The endangered species act is a law that conserves endangered and threatened species of wildlife and plants. An “endangered” animal or plant is an animal or plant that is in danger of becoming extinct. If the animal is an insect that is a pest, they are not protected. A “threatened” animal or plant is likely to become endangered. If you disobey the law you can be punished.

Some information straight from the law:

AN ACT To provide for the conservation of endangered and threatened species of
fish, wildlife, and plants, and for other purposes.

Sec 3 (6) The term ‘‘endangered species’’ means any species which is
in danger of extinction throughout all or a significant portion of its
range other than a species of the Class Insecta determined by the
Secretary to constitute a pest whose protection under the provisions
of this Act would present an overwhelming and overriding
risk to man.

Sec 3 (20) The term ‘‘threatened species’’ means any species which is
likely to become an endangered species within the foreseeable future
throughout all or a significant portion of its range.
