Thought of the Day:
If God had a refrigerator, your picture would be on it.
If he had a wallet, your photo would be in it.
He sends you flowers every spring.
He sends you a sunrise every morning.
Face it- He's crazy about you!

God didn't promise days without pain, laughter without sorrow, sun without rain, but He promise strength for the day, comfort for tears, and light for the way.
THE TURTLES

A turtle family decided to go on a picnic. Turtles, being naturally slow about things, took seven years to prepare their outing. finally, the turtle family left home looking for a suitable place for their outing. During the secong year of their journey, they found a place ideal for them at last!

For about six months, they cleaned up the area, unpacked the picnic basket, and completed the arrangements. Then they discovered they had forgotten the salt. A picnic without salt would be a disaster, they all agreed. After a lengthy discussion, the youngest turtle was chosen to retrieve the salt from home. Although he was the fastest of the slow moving turtles, the little turtle whined, cried, and wobbled in his shell. He agreed to go on one condition:that no one would eat until he returned.

The family consented and the little turtle left.

Three years passed and the little turtle had not returned. Five years... six years... then on the seventh year of his absence, the oldest turtle could no longer contain his hunger. He announced that he was going to eat and begun unwrapping a sandwich. At that point, the little turtle suddenly popped out from behing a tree shouting, "SEE! I knew you wouldn't wait. Now I am not going to get the salt."

(Some of us waste our time waiting for people to live up to our expectations. We are so concerned about what others are doing that we don't do anything ourselves.)

THE WAY JOURNALISTS WRITE

Finally, the article you all had been waiting for...

STYLE in a newspaper terms refers to the way reporters approach the presentation of different types of NEWS. News is usually divided into two categories: hard news and soft news. Hard news is a story in which time is a factor. It has to be reported immediately or it will be old news. The idea then is to get all the facts and details into the newspaper as soon as possible. Soft news is not usually time sensitive and it won't be necessarily be tied to a major event.

As newspaper writing styles go, there are three basics:

THE STRAIGHT OR HARD NEWS STORY

News stories essentially stories that aim only to inform the reader that 'something happened'. They generally have three distinct sections beginning with a short summary of the main facts in the headline, and the main facts in the first paragraph or two (the lead). Then, the body follows to tell the story in greater detail. In addition to telling us that 'something happened', a news story could also tell the readers that:

- Something is happening.
- Something is going to or expected to happen.
- Someone said something happened.
- Someone said that something may happen.
- Someone said that something is happening.
- Someone said something should happen.
- Someone said something should not have happened.

VESSELS OF ANCIENT TIMES

Our oldest records of shipbuilding and seafearing come from the Egyptians. With the Nile River as a natural water highway in their country, the Egyptians soon learned to build a variety of boats, rafts and ships. Huge rafts were built to float the stones used for the great pyramids from the quarries to the building sites. Other kinds of vessels were used to carry on trade with the distant lands from Egypt imported rare woods, precious stones, and exotic animals.

Know Your WoRlD

Famous Firsts...
Maybe you have heard about some of these people and places. Each person did something important-something heroic 'first'.

Men Only...
Susan B. Anthony was born in the U.S. in the 1800's. At that time, only MEN could vote in the elections. Suan B. Anthony thought women should be able to vote, too. She spent her life fightingto get women the right to vote. She voted in 1872, but her vote wasn't counted. Moreover, she was arrested. When she died in 1906, only four states had given women the right to vote. Today, every woman in the state has that right.

One Way to Paris...
Charles Lindbergh was the first person to fly alone across the Atlantic Ocean. A New York City hotel owner had offered a $25,000 prize to the first person who could fly non-stop from New York to Paris. Lindbergh took off early in the morning of May 20, 1927. He flew his plane, "The Spirit of St. Louis," through the rain, fog, and sleet. He landed in Paris 33 hours and 30 minutes later. He had flown 3,600 miles alone across the Atlantic.

Female Flyer Makes News...
Amelia Earhart was the first WOMAN-and the second pilot-to fly across the Atlantic alone. To prepare for the long flight, she went without food or sleep for many days at a time. Her flight from Newfoundland to Ireland took 14 hours.

In 1937, she and Fred Noonan were trying to fly a two-engine plane around the world. Over the Pacific, they ran out of fuel. Ships and planes searched for the couple but their plane was never found.

Month of Ramadhan

It is now the month of Ramadhan or Bulan Puasa (month of fasting) in Malaysia. This means it's time for the Islam people here, start fasting. For those who don't know what is 'fasting', it is actually not eating and drinking for a period of time. The Islams have to do it for a month!! They start at 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. So, they can eat before 7 a.m. and after 7 p.m...

They do this out of tradition and to feel how others who don't have food like we do. Though only the Islam people do this, people from other religions also do it too! Though they can't last for a month like Islams. (^_^)

After 7pm, the streets near shops will be bombarded with food stalls all selling traditional Malay food. Though, most of the hawkers are Malays some of the customers are from different religions too! The food they sell are lemang (rice in a bamboo shoot), kuih (something like jelly but actully isn't can be considered pastry), nasi lemak (traditional served rice with sambal, chicken, anchoives, bolied egg and other... depending of the kind of nasi lemak), and LOADS of other food as well. Oh ya, don't forget satay (something like kebab but only with meat)'picture shown above'.

To those who are starting to fast, we wish you happy fasting!

(please e-mail us if we are wrong with the facts...)
