Beauty Blog - an inquiry about what is beautiful

The Beauty Blog

Students at Glenwood Elementary School are investigating the question "What is Beauty?" A group of 3rd-5th grade ESL students read the books "Wings" by Christopher Myers and "Something Beautiful" by Sharon Dennis Wyeth and interviewed people in their families or communities.

Here are some of the questions they considered.

To me beauty means anything that makes people happy and makes the world a better place. To me the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia (where I grew up) are beautiful because I feel peaceful every time I see them. People and things that are unique and different can also be beautiful. I thought Ikarus Jackson was beautiful because of his wings. I find train whistles beautiful for their haunting sound and cardinals for their bright red feathers. Acts of kindness are also beautiful to me. When my son says, "I love you, mom," and my daughter cleans her room without being asked, that is also beautiful. I think Greg Mortenson's work building schools in Pakistan is beautiful because he is helping so many people. What do you think is beautiful? -Ms. A.

I think beauty is something beautiful, like clothes, like a view, like all kinds of animals, books, birds, flowers, the universe, everything except thieves. My mom and dad said that beauty is a good view or a pleasant thing or person, such as beautiful scenery, beautiful clothes, or beautiful girls! I think my hands are beautiful because they help me raise my hand to answer the teacher's question. My hand also helps me to write. I learned about how there is inner beauty and outer beauty. Inner beauty means a person could be ugly, but their heart is beautiful. Outer beauty could mean that the outside is pretty, but the heart is cold. At first, I only thought beauty is like a beautiful person, but I learned inner beauty means the heart is beautiful. That is beauty too. -Jessica Y.

Hi! My name is Nancy G.To me beauty is that something or somebody looks good. Beauty is also someone who helps others and acts nicely to others. My friend Linda said that something is beautiful if it looks good and my mom said beauty is when somebody looks lovely and cute. I think a flower is beautiful because it looks nice. And i think my eyes are beautiful because they can help me to read and see and help me to study for tests. The main character of "Come On Wink Blue" is beautiful because she helps others and acts nicely to everyone. Before I thought Beauty is just when something or somebody looks good. But now I will add when somebody helps others and acts nicely to others.

Beauty means animals to me because they are as nice as people and they do not try to kill people. My mom said beauty means kind and clean people. Sometimes I think inner beauty means that everyone has their own talent. When I asked my sister, she said inner beauty is more powerful than outer beauty because if your face is beautiful but you don't have a kind heart, your beautiful face is no use. I think beauty is nature, for example bears. One time, President Teddy Roosevelt shot a mother bear and the little baby bear was so upset that the President saved the baby bear and gave him the name of "Teddy" and didn't kill any animals after that. I want to be a vegetarian because vegetarians don't eat animals (although I do like meat!). I have lots of beautiful memories of my pet rabbit, Sunny, who died.
In the book "Wings," Ikarus' wings were beautiful like the freedom of joy. In the book "Something Beautiful" everything was beautiful, even the trash, because it reminds us not to spoil the Earth and nature. My ideas about beauty changed because I realized that outer beauty is nothing and inner beauty is being kind-hearted and nice. If your heart is not good, your beautiful face is nothing! -Emily K.

Hello, I am Howard C. I made this project of beauty. For me I think beauty is sports. I like to play soccer and dodgeball and badminton. My mom said that flowers are beautiful because they smell good. My dad said cars are beautiful because they are cool and fun. He sells cars in Durham. I also think computer games are beautiful because they are fun and the characters look cute, like the red Martian called Toad in Super Mario game. In the book "Something Beautiful" I learned that if you clean your room or your house, it will be beautiful. In "Wings" the character was a different kind of person and that was beautiful. In the poem the apple was beautiful because it made you think of a star. The poem about the umbrella was kind of cool because different things like flowers look like umbrella too. My ideas about beauty changed because I learned that a lot of things are beautiful, like being clean and repainting your room and redoing your test...
