Miley Stewart is fourteen years old, and an eighth grader at Seaview Middle School, and Hannah Montana, her alter-ego, is the same age. Her father frequently calls her "Bud" and her brother calls her "Miles." Her best friends are Lilly Truscott (Emily Osment) and Oliver Oken (Mitchel Musso), and her arch-enemies are Amber and Ashley (Shanica Knowles and Anna Maria Perez de Tagle), two girls who constantly bully her and her friends. She has a crush on Jake Ryan, the TV star that goes to her school, who likes Miley. Jake Ryan and Miley hooked up in the episode "People Who Use People." Miley has ordinary adolescent insecurities, like normal people.
Miley's secret alter-ego is Hannah Montana, who is a famous pop music singer. She became a singer from following the advice of her aunt Dolly (Dolly Parton). Miley wears a blond wig and sometimes sunglasses when she is Hannah. It is assumed that she has been Hannah Montana for at the most 3 years. She lives with her father Robby (played by Cyrus's real-life father Billy Ray Cyrus), who is also her manager and producer and her brother Jackson (Jason Earles). She is protected by her bodyguard Roxy (Frances Callier). Only those close to her, including family and close friends, know about her double life as a singer. She is very afraid that people will not treat her like a normal teenager if she was to tell the world she was Hannah Montana, so she tries very hard to keep her secret, even though her alter-ego sometimes slips out in certain situations.
