The Great Walt Whitman

Walt Whitman was a great poet. He is also my great, great, great uncle. I hope to share his great works through this blog.
I will try to update a new poem every week.
"I Can Hear America Singing"

I Hear America Singing, the varied carols I hear;
Those of mechanics--each one singing his, as it should be, blithe and strong;
The carpenter singing his, as he measures his plank or beam.
The mason singing his, as he makes ready for work, or leaves off work. . .

-Walt Whitman
"And your very flesh shall be a great poem."

-Walt Whitman

One of Walt's most famous works:
"Leaves of Grass."

An original copy.
"A Noiseless, Patient Spider"

A noiseless, patient spider,
I mark'd, where. on a little promontory, it stood, isolated;
Mark'd how, to explore the vacant, vast surrounding,
It launched forth filament, filament, filament, out of itself;
Ever unreeling them--ever tirelessly speeding them. . .

-Walt Whitman
"The proof of a poet is that his country absorbs him as affectionately as he has absorbed it."

-Walt Whitman
This is a poem that was written in a letter to President Lincoln from Walt Whitman on February 9, 1888 in response to the president's assassination.

"O Captain! My Captain!"

O Captain! My Captain! our fearful trip is done;
The ship has weather'd every rack, the prize we sought is won;
The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting,
While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring:
But O heart! heart! heart!
O the bleeding drops of red,
Where on the deck my Captain lies,
Fallen cold and dead.

President Lincoln: The inspiration of "Oh Captain! My Captain!"

Walt Whitman was loved all over the world. <3

The great poet was respected for his work, and some people even thought he was a god. If he had chosen so, he could have had great power. But Walt was an honest and respectful man, so he just went on writing, and writing and writing...

Here's a picture of Walt in his younger years when he first started writing.
