I.E.S. “Viera y Clavijo” belongs to the municipality of San Cristóbal de La Laguna which is Tenerife’s second most important city, a municipality of the northern part of the island situated just inland from Santa Cruz in the Aguere Valley. La Laguna is also the cultural and religious capital of the island and its architecture and museums attract tourists all year round.
This school is located within the urban area of La Laguna and as such, most of the students that attend its classes live in the surrounding areas of the city or come from rural areas such as: Los Baldíos, Geneto, Llano del Moro, Montaña de la Mina or Camino del Medio. The development of new housing estates around this area has also meant an increase in the number of urban students attending this school.
As part of a programme developed by the government to help students to improve their skills in general, the local authorities provide the school with assistants who teach English for free in the afternoon twice a week. Other evening activities promoted by the local authorities using the school facilities include: basketball, football and athletics competitions. Students also take part in other programmes about: road safety, theatre, justice, cultural heritage, etc.
This public school has three IT rooms in total, one for teachers and two for students. There are also 15 laptop computers with wireless connection available to be used by the students in class. Other facilities include: a video room, a technology room, a Chemistry lab, a music room, a Natural Science room, a drawing room, an arts exhibition room, a theatre stage and a school farm.
