DARIUS GOES WEST
Have you ever heard of Duchenne Muscular Dystropthy (DMD)? Have you ever heard of Darius Goes West? Even if you haven't, I reccomend you check out this link! Darius Goes West On this site, you'll learn about a fifteen-year-old boy named Darius Weems who set out on an extrordinary cross-country journey with eleven of his friends. Leaving home for the first time in his life, Darius and his friends set off for California where they hope to get Darius' wheelchair "tricked out" on an MTV show called "Pimp My Ride." (For those of you who don't know, Duchennes affects only boys and is a degenerative condition. It causes the mucles to weaken and forces the boys who are affected by it to use wheelchairs by a young age). It's been nearly five years since the Darius Goes West trip, and while MTV refused to do Darius' wheelchair, their journey still made a huge impact both in Darius' life and in the lives of others. Now Darius is 20 years old and has passed the average life expectancy of a Duchenne's patient (which is 19-20). However, he has lost some weight, which is a negative sign, as Duchennes cannot be cured (for now!!!).
