On Easter Monday 1916,
James Connolly, Pádraig Pearse And Thomas Clarke with around 200 men.
Charged the General Post Office and many other important city buildings.
Such as Jacobs Biscuit Factory, Liberty Hall and Boland Mills.
At 12 am The Irish Republic was proclaimed.
Pádraig Pearse read the proclaimation of Independence.
Baracades were made from overturned cars.
Soon afterward the Lancers ( soldiers on horses )
Charged towards the General Post Office.
Many were cut down and shot.
Men took the Lancer's pistols and ammunition.
After a five day stand-off the rebel leaders wrote out a surrender form and signed it.
Many captured rebels were sent to prison camps in Wales.
Some were shot, but a lucky few escaped.
The prisoners over in Wales were set free after a year.
By that time republican support and funding had massively grown.
Speeches were made and a new government Dáil Eirinn decided to launch a guerilla war.
A war where enemy soldiers were shot secretly.
In 1924 we were upgraded to The Irish Free State. But for some that wasn't enough. They wanted total independence from England and to not have to take an oath on the crown when joining parlament! That was the Civil War but thats another story. |
