Description: Carlisle is the father figure of the Cullen coven of vampires. He is portrayed as being extremely kind and even-tempered. This was even apparent when he was a human, as he was described as being “not quick to accuse, to see demons where they did not exist,” (Twilight, pg. 331). Because of his compassion and aversion to taking human life, he has never drunk human blood. (This is implied in Eclipse, pg. 163, when Rosalie says, “…my record is almost as clean as Carlisle’s… I’ve never tasted human blood.”)

Personal History—
Carlisle Cullen was born in London, sometime just before the rule of Cromwell in the 1640’s. His father was an Anglican pastor who is described as intolerant. He fiercely persecuted Roman Catholics and other religions during the rise of Protestant power, and led hunts for witches, werewolves, and vampires. Carlisle was on his way to taking his fathers place in this capacity when he discovered a coven of vampires living in the sewers of London. During the attack on the vampire coven one of them turned and attacked Carlisle, leaving him bleeding in the street. Carlisle escaped and hid for three days while the transformation was completed (Twilight, pg. 331-332).

When Carlisle realized that he had become a vampire, he initially tried to destroy himself. He resisted his thirst for blood for so long, and strayed from the human population, that one night his thirst drove him to attack a herd of deer. When he realized that this returned some of his strength to him, he began his new vegetarian lifestyle. Eventually Carlisle swam to France, where he continued on to travel through Europe and study at the Universities, eventually he found his calling and his redemption in medicine and saving lives (Twilight, pg. 336-339).

Carlisle lived with the Volturi in Italy for a time before moving to America. While working in Columbus Ohio in 1911 he fixed the broken leg of a young girl (his future wife) named Esme Platt. Next, Carlisle moved to Chicago, and it was during the time of the Spanish influenza in 1918 when he found Edward. Both of Edward’s parents were dead, or on the verge of death, and just before dying Edward’s mother begged Carlisle to save Edward. This was the first time Carlisle had changed someone, and says to Bella that he made the process a bit more painful than necessary because of his lack of expertise in the matter (New Moon, pg. 38-41).

Carlisle and Edward lived and travelled together for a time, until in 1921, Carlisle once again came across an injured Esme. This time her injuries were from a suicide attempt she had made after losing her baby. When Carlisle saw her brought into the hospital he remembered Esme as the happy 16 year old he had mended before, and did not want to let her die. They were married shortly after.

Next in line to join Carlisle’s coven was Rosalie. Carlisle changed her after finding her dying in the street, after being beaten by her fiancé and his friends (Eclipse, pg. 160). Carlisle had hoped that Rosalie would become a partner for Edward, but that never happened (Eclipse, pg. 165). Eventually Rosalie found Emmett being mauled by a bear and asked Carlisle to change him for her. Carlisle complied, and Rosalie and Emmett have been together since. Carlisle has not changed anyone since Emmett, but has agreed to change Bella if Edward will not (New Moon, pg. 537).

Carlisle currently lives in Forks with Esme, Alice, Jasper, Edward and Rosalie and Emmett from time to time.

Personal History-
Esme Anne Platt was born in Columbus, Ohio, in 1895. When she was sixteen, she fell out of a tree and broke her leg. It was treated by a Dr. Cullen, who proved to be a man she would never forget. Nobody else she met could measure up to her memory of the doctor, and she could not fall in love with a man who was not as incredible as he.

Charles Evenson was no different; Esme did not have any feelings for him, yet she married him anyway at her father's request. He was frightened by the idea of her moving west to be a single schoolteacher forever, and arranged the marriage. Charles, however, was very different from the man he seemed to be on the outside. Esme was abused, but she kept silent about it. Charles was eventually drafted into WWI, but returned home alive in 1919.

Soon after Charles returned home, Esme found out that she was pregnant. In order to protect her unborn child, she ran away from her marriage and her home. She lived north of Milwaukee, and pretended to be one of many war widows. She taught school just outside of Ashland. Her newborn son died due to a lung infection, sending Esme into a serious depression. With nothing left to lose, she attempted to commit suicide by jumping off a cliff. She barely survived the fall, however, and was taken to the morgue of a small hospital in Ashland.

Dr. Cullen happened to be working there and recognized her immediately as the young girl he'd treated from Columbus. He chose to change her into a vampire, rather than allowing her to die, and their relationship quickly grew into love from there.

Personal History—
Edward was born on June 20, 1901 to Elizabeth and Edward Masen, who were a comfortably wealthy family in Chicago. He was 17 when the age for the draft lowered and the influenza epidemic hit. Edward was contemplating signing up for the army when he and his family became sick. After his father succumbed to the disease, his mother, with her last breaths, pleaded with Carlisle to do anything to save her only son. Carlisle knew that Edward, too, would not withstand the disease much longer, and, desperate with loneliness, decided to change Edward to have some company. Edward discovered after that his transformation came with a rare gift: the ability to read minds. Quickly, Edward adopted Carlisle’s strict vegetarian diet, but he went through a period of “rebellious adolescence,” (Twilight, pg. 342) during which he sought out criminals. This lifestyle did not suit Edward, and his conscience soon got the better of him, so he returned to live with Carlisle and the rest of the Cullens.

Because of their unique status, the Cullens move around frequently, and Forks is their latest destination due to its rainy climate. It is there that Edward meets Bella, and has his life changed forever. Her scent is so irresistible at first that Edward contemplates killing the entire biology class just feed on Bella. Through some inner strength, he manages to control himself long enough to get out of school and visit Carlisle, before heading to Alaska for some space. Not only had he been he overcome by her scent, he was also puzzled by his inability to hear her thoughts. Once he has thought it over, Edward decides he is strong enough to withstand Bella’s intoxicating scent. Edward passes the next few weeks attempting to understand Bella, but to no avail. When Bella is almost killed an out-of-control van, Edward used his superhuman strength to push it away from her.

It is around this time that Edward realizes his budding feelings for Bella, but he fights to control them. Their friendship grows [omitted comma splice] and they fall in love. While introducing Bella to his family, rogue vampires turn up [omitted comma splice] and the leader, James, immediately sets out to hunt Bella. The Cullens band together and save the day.

For Bella’s birthday, Edward and Alice plan a simple party, but, in true Bella fashion, disaster strikes. Jasper loses control when Bella gives herself a paper cut while unwrapping one of her presents. This leads to the entire Cullen clan moving [omitted comma splice] and Edward breaking up with Bella [omitted comma] for her own good. Edward spends the agonizing time apart tracking Victoria, James’ outraged companion, and wishing to be with Bella once more. Just when Edward feels as though he cannot spend another day away from Bella, he hears the devastating, if inaccurate, news that she has died. Desperately, Edward flees to Italy, where he plans to beg or force the vampiric royalty, the Volturi, to kill him. This time Bella comes to the rescue, along with Alice.

Soon after Edward and the Cullens return to Forks, reports of a mysterious killing spree begin to pop up. It becomes quickly apparent that the killings are the work of a newborn vampire army [no comma] and the Cullens devise a plan to eradicate them. Conflict also arises in the form of Jacob Black, Bella’s newfound friend and werewolf, who views vampires as his mortal enemies. His feelings for Bella go beyond friendship [no comma] and Edward cannot help but feel threatened by Jake’s presence. Edward, however allows Bella the opportunity to choose [no comma] and, in the end, he triumphs. In the midst of strategizing, Edward and Bella work out an agreement for their future. Before Bella can be changed, she has to marry Edward and before Bella will marry him, he has to give her the wedding night she desires. The werewolves work out a plan to aid in battle [no comma] and Edward reluctantly sits out [no comma] to appease Bella. The battle [finds] its way to Edward, however, when Victoria and her minion Riley show up to finish off Bella. They are not successful. After the battle, plans for the wedding begin, much to Edward’s amusement.

Personal History—
In 1933, while Rosalie Hale was living in Rochester, New York with her father, mother, and two younger brothers, she met Royce King the Second. Royce’s father owned the bank her father worked at and also every other profitable business in town. (Eclipse, pg. 156) After a courtship of around two months, Royce King the Second and Rosalie became engaged. An extremely lavish wedding was planned for. One night, Rosalie was walking home from her friend Vera’s house when she came upon a group of very drunk men. (Eclipse, pg. 159) When they called out to her, Rosalie noticed that it was Royce and his friends. After being beaten and abused and left for dead in the middle of the street, Carlisle Cullen smelled the blood and found her. (Eclipse, pg. 160)

Thinking Rosalie could be to Edward what Esme was to him, Carlisle transformed Rosalie into a vampire. Rosalie went on to exact revenge on the five men that left her to die (and two guards guarding Royce). To this day, they are the only humans Rosalie has killed and she did not taste their blood.

In 1935, Rosalie was hunting in Appalachia when she came upon Emmett being killed by the bear. Seeing a close resemblance to her friend Vera’s child, Rosalie carried Emmett back to Carlisle. Carlisle transformed Emmett into a vampire and Emmett became Rosalie’s soul mate. She married Emmett and continues to have a very intense and physical love with him.

Rosalie becomes very jealous when Edward meets Bella in Forks. Rosalie is having a hard time getting over the fact that Edward chooses Bella over her and all of the other females he has come across. Rosalie is also jealous of the fact that Bella is still human and can have a human life. Rosalie is very upset that Bella is willingly choosing to become a vampire.

When James decides to go after Bella, Rosalie refuses to wear Bella’s clothing. (Twilight, pg. 401) She views Bella as a danger to her family and does not approve of them risking their safety for her. (Twilight, pg. 401)

After Edward leaves Bella, Rosalie is with Alice when Alice sees Bella jumping off a cliff. When Alice leaves to Forks to see what has happened, Rosalie calls Edward to tell him the news of Bella’s death. (New Moon, pg. 415) Full of remorse for what she has done, Rosalie meets Bella, Edward, and Alice at the airport and begs for forgiveness from Bella and Edward. (New Moon, pg. 497)

For Bella’s wedding, Rosalie helps Alice put Bella’s hair into braids. (Breaking Dawn, pg. 43) Rosalie plays the piano for Bella as she walks down the aisle towards Edward. (Breaking Dawn, pg. 47)

Bella calls Rosalie when she finds out she is pregnant to ask for her help protecting the unborn child. Rosalie acts as Bella’s bodyguard to make sure that neither Edward nor Carlisle can harm the little boy or girl. Rosalie helps Bella to the bathroom and also helps get Bella blood when they realize what the unborn child is craving. When Renesmee is born, Rosalie continues to watch over her as Bella transforms into a vampire and also is a very doting Aunt.

When the Volturi threaten the entire Cullen family, Rosalie joins Emmett and goes traveling throughout the north in order to find any nomads to help their cause and protect her family.

Because Emmett speaks from his mind and does not edit what he thinks, he can sometimes appear a bit harsh to those around him. Bella seems to think nothing ever bothers Emmett and he is always at ease.

Personal History—
In 1935, when Emmett McCarty was twenty-years-old, he was in Appalachia when a bear attacked him. Just as he was about to die, he felt like he was flying and opened his eyes to see an angel. That angel turned out to be Rosalie Hale, who carried him over a hundred miles to Carlisle Cullen to be changed into a vampire. (Twilight, pg. 289) Emmett and Rosalie were married, and continue to get married from time to time.

When Bella arrives in Forks, Emmett doesn’t completely understand Edward’s fascination with her. Edward annoys Emmett when they are hunting in Goat Rocks Wilderness because he is so tormented worrying about Bella’s safety. (Twilight, pg. 189) After the baseball game, Emmett is excited at the idea of getting to hunt down James. (Twilight, pg. 383) Emmett arrives in Phoenix just in time with Edward and Carlisle to help save Bella and take care of James.

For Bella’s eighteenth birthday, Emmett installs a new stereo into her truck. (New Moon, pg. 26) Emmett returns to the house just in time to see Bella cut herself on Edward’s present. (New Moon, pg. 28) Emmett is forced to grab Jasper and force him outside before any harm comes to Bella. (New Moon, pg. 29)

Emmett starts to go and save Edward when Edward decides to go and provoke the Volturi, but Jasper stops him after Alice tells him it would not save Edward. (New Moon, pg. 425) Emmett is waiting at the airport with Rosalie and the Cullens when Alice, Edward, and Alice return home. Emmett teases Rosalie that is does not count if Bella forgives her for telling Edward she was dead because Bella is not conscious. (New Moon, pg. 498)

When Victoria returns to Forks to avenge James, Emmett and Paul almost get into a fight when Emmett accidentally crosses into Quileute territory when both are trying to catch Victoria. (Eclipse, pg. 86-87) Although Edward was not sure who stole Bella’s clothing, Emmett and Jasper both sweep the woods around her house to try to find out who took them and where they were. (Eclipse, pg. 201) When the Cullens realize a newborn army is being formed in Seattle, Emmett is anxious to go and take care of them before the Volturi become involved.

Emmett teases Bella constantly about the fact that their cottage is still standing after she becomes a vampire and makes a lot of sexual innuendos about the subject when Charlie is visiting the Cullens. (Breaking Dawn, pg. 490 and 511) To get Emmett to stop embarrassing her in front of Charlie, Bella challenges Emmett to an arm-wrestling competition. Personal History—
Jasper Whitlock was born in 1843 in Houston, Texas. He joined the Confederate Army in 1861 when he was just barely seventeen years old; he was tall enough that the recruiters believed him when he told them he was twenty. His parents and his younger sister were still alive when he was transformed into a vampire; he hasn’t seen them since then.

He had become the youngest major in Texas by the first battle of Galveston. One of his assignments involved evacuating women and children from the city and taking them to Houston. On the eve of their arrival, he ensured that all of the civilians were safely situated, and then returned on horseback to Galveston. On the way there, he ran into three female vampires—Nettie, Lucy, and his creator, Maria. She bit him that night, and three days later, he was introduced to his new life.

Maria then brought him into the violent world of battling for territories. He became her second-in-command, and was in charge of training newborn vampires in combat. Together, he and the new fledglings captured city after city. He was, and still is, a very skilled fighter. It was also then that he discovered his special talent: an uncanny ability to manipulate the emotions of those around him.

During those stormy years, he befriended a vampire named Peter, who often helped him to dispose of newborn vampires when they have outgrown their usefulness. After a while, the sickening pattern of their lifestyle began to take a toll on them both, but Peter was the first to bow out. Five years later, he returned for Jasper, bringing news about a different way of life he had discovered with another newborn named Charlotte. In one conversation, Jasper was easily convinced, and he left Maria without a backward glance.

He traveled with Peter and Charlotte for a few years, but he could not escape his depression. Because of his extraordinary talent with emotions, he could live peoples’ feelings as he killed them. For the first century of his life, he was a filter for bloodthirsty vengeance and hatred, and while he wandered with Peter and Charlotte, he felt terror and fear whenever he preyed on other humans. He became very tired of killing, then, but he couldn’t find the discipline to stop. He still struggles with that to this day. Eventually, he left Peter and Charlotte and continued on alone.

One stormy night in 1948, he entered a small, half-empty diner in Philadelphia. There, he met Alice, who had told him that she had seen Carlisle’s family and their peaceful existence. Together, they set off and in 1950, found the Cullens.

In 2003, the Cullens moved to Forks, Washington, where all the “children” enrolled into high school. Jasper adopted Rosalie’s last name, Hale, mainly because they look so much alike, and the disguise of being her twin brother was a good cover-up. When Bella Swan moved to Forks, Jasper, along with Rosalie and Emmett, was a senior.

Personal History—
In her youth as a human, Alice was admitted to an asylum because of her visions she was having of the future. During her stay, she gained the affections of an older vampire who worked there. James had found the older vampire’s attachment to Alice intriguing and decided to hunt her, but he never got the chance to finish the chase because the elder vampire bit Alice in order to save her. All of this self-knowledge was lost to her after she changed (Twilight, pg. 447-448). Later, Alice learned that her parents admitted her to the asylum and then pretended that she had died (New Moon, pg. 401.)

After being turned into a vampire, Alice wandered for years, with only her visions of the future to keep her grounded. In them, she saw Carlisle and the rest of the Cullens, and knew that one day she would join their family. Also, she foresaw Jasper and understood that they were meant to be together. She was able to see where it was they would meet for the first time, and went to wait for him there. Eventually he unknowingly stumbled in, and she greeted him as if they were old friends who were supposed to have met up ages ago. Together, they set off to find the Cullens, and have been with them ever since (Eclipse, pg. 301-302.)

Out of all the Cullens, Bella is closest to Alice after Edward, and consequently Alice has played a prominent role in all of Bella’s life-threatening encounters. When James was on the hunt for Bella, Alice escorted her into hiding in Phoenix along with Jasper (Twilight, pg. 406). In New Moon, Alice was the first to return to Forks and find Bella in her sad state. Along with Bella, Alice traveled to Italy in order to save Edward’s life when he went there asking the Volturi to kill him, having thought Bella had committed suicide (New Moon, pg. 419). Bella grew up with her mother in Phoenix, Arizona (Twilight, pg. 3) until the age of seventeen, when she exiled herself to Forks, Washington. Once she became introduced to Edward Cullen and his family, she found herself in the midst of a fantastical world. He saved Bella from death by stopping a car with his bare hands (Twilight, pg. 56), and later from a rowdy group of young men will ill intentions (Twilight pg. 161). At Bella’s 18th birthday party, disaster struck once again. While opening presents, Bella gives herself a paper cut and Jasper, not entirely accustomed to the vegetarian life, attacked her. (New Moon, pg. 30) Edward began to worry that he was putting her life in jeopardy by spending time with her, and left. For months, Bella lived in a zombie-like state which she attempted to keep at bay for Charlie. In order to return to some sense of normalcy, Bella befriended Jacob Black by asking him to fix up two motorcycles (New Moon, pg. 130). She found that by doing life-threatening activities, she could hear Edward’s voice giving her warnings, and therefore began a quest of recklessness—her existence was propelled by hearing Edward’s voice. She and Jacob searched for the meadow where Edward first showed himself in sunlight, but once Jacob stopped spending time with Bella, she found it on her own. In the meadow, Bella encountered a hungry Laurent, one of the nomad vampires (New Moon, pg. 235). He was about to kill her, despite his promise to Victoria that she could have that honor, but Jacob and his pack of werewolves appeared in the meadow and killed Laurent(New Moon, pg. 244). Bella then became integrated into the pack while they attempted to hunt Victoria down. While the pack was gone tracking Victoria, Bella attempted cliff diving in a desperate act to hear Edward's voice. (New Moon, pg. 358) While Jacob saved her from drowning, Alice saw the cliff-diving in a vision as an act of suicide, and immediately told the rest of the Cullens. Rosalie contacted Edward in South America and told him that Bella had killed herself, which prompted him to go to the Volturi to kill him (New Moon, pg. 418). Alice took Bella to Italy to stop him, and they narrowly managed to save themselves and Edward. Upon finding that Bella knew about the vampire's existence, the Volturi placed an ultimatum on Bella; become a vampire, or be killed. The Cullens voted and agreed that Bella transforming would be the best course of action. (New Moon, pg. 535).

Graduation loomed while Bella struggled between spending time with both Jacob and Edward, who loathed each other. Edward realized how much Jacob meant to her and allowed her to visit La Push, since she would be safe with the werewolves as she would be with the Cullens. Seattle was victim to a killing spree, and the Cullens realized it was the work of a newborn army created to destroy Bella. After graduation, Alice foresaw that the army planned to attack Forks in the near future. The Cullens recruited help from the Denali clan in Alaska, who refused. As a last resort, the werewolves were asked, and they eagerly agreed. (Eclipse, pg. 380) Bella selfishly pled with Edward to sit out the battle, to which he reluctantly defaulted. (Eclipse, pg. 421) Around the same time, Edward proposed to Bella, who agreed to marry him if he would be the one to transform her (Eclipse, pg. 460). Edward constructed a plan to keep Bella hidden with him during the battle. Jacob helped to hide her scent, and before he left to fight the newborns, he made Bella realize that she was in love with him (Eclipse, pg. 528). This caused Bella to have an emotional breakdown because she knew that no matter how much she loved Jacob, Edward would be the only one she couldn’t live without. The battle ended after Edward killed Victoria in an unexpected skirmish with the help of young werewolf Seth (Eclipse pg. 553). Once the threat of Victoria had passed, Bella had time to prepare for the wedding. She gave Alice permission to plan the wedding, and asked her to be the Maid of Honor (Eclipse, pg. 612).

Personal History—
While on their honeymoon on Isle Esme, Bella and Edward conceive Renesmee. The baby’s conception is possible because Bella is still human at that point and male vampires have “many versions of venom-based fluids that retain a marked resemblance to the fluid that was replaced, and function in much the same way and toward the same purpose.”

Edward’s first instinct is to remove the fetus from Bella before it hurts her. Bella, however, is determined to go through with the pregnancy. Keeping the baby comes at a large price, though, nearly killing Bella.

Renesmee’s birth comes only one month after her conception. Mere moments after she is born and as Edward changes Bella, Renesmee meets Jacob and he imprints on her. Bella decides on the name Renesmee in honor of her mother, Renee, and her mother-in-law, Esme. However, without Bella’s consent, the rest of the family and Jacob give her the nickname Nessie.

Renesmee grows exponentially and she ages mentally even faster than she does physically. As the Cullens later find out, vampire-human hybrids grow much faster than human children grow, but stop growing once they hit adulthood. Irina, however, does not realize that Renesmee is a not an “immortal child” when she runs off to tell the Volturi about her. In the end, Nessie manages to win over enough vampires with her charm to serve as witnesses of her growth to the Volturi, and all survive the encounter.
