Saw IV is the fourth installment in the Saw series. The film was initially released on October 25, 2007, and in the United States on October 26, 2007. The film's North American release date follows the series' tradition that the films be released there the Friday before or on Halloween of each year. This installment continues the story of the Jigsaw Killer, and his obsession with teaching people the value of their own lives. Although Jigsaw died in the last installment (Saw III), this film focuses on his ability to manipulate people into continuing his work. Saw IV was directed by Saw II and Saw III director Darren Lynn Bousman alongside with co-creators James Wan and Leigh Whannell returning as executive producers.[4] Unlike the previous three films, Saw IV was not written by either Wan or Whannel.

The film opens with the autopsy of the Jigsaw Killer, who died in the climax of Saw III. During the operation, a wax-coated microcassette is found in Jigsaw's stomach, a flashback is shown of Jigsaw pouring wax on the tape and swallowing it. Detective Hoffman is called to the scene, where he plays the tape which states that Jigsaw's games have "just begun."

The film then cuts to a man in a mausoleum. He begins to panic when he realizes his eyes are sewn shut. He begins pulling on a chain, waking another man whose mouth is sewn shut. Between them is a large device. A trigger tab is pulled, causing the device to activate and begins to pull them both together. The mute man discovers a key on the blind man's collar and a fight ensues. The mute man manages to take the key and tries to remove the collar but the blind man attacks again. The mute man kills him in defense and removes the collar. He screams in terror, tearing the stitches away.

Meanwhile, the police discover the corpse of Detective Kerry, who was murdered in Saw III. Detective Hoffman scolds Lieutenant Rigg for going through an unsecured door. Rigg is told to leave. Hoffman is introduced to FBI agents Peter Strahm and Lindsey Perez, who Detective Kerry was in touch with. They deduce that Detective Kerry was too heavy for Amanda Young to lift into the Ribcage Harness, meaning Jigsaw has another apprentice.

That evening, Rigg is attacked in his home and Hoffman is kidnapped. Rigg learns through a videotape that Eric Matthews is still alive and has 90 minutes to save him. Rigg enters his first test, which is in his home and discovers a woman named Brenda who is strapped into a device with a message saying "SEE WHAT I SEE" on a wall. Rigg tries to save her, although his tape tells him not to. Rigg manages to rescue her but afterwards she tries to kill him. Rigg subdues her and throws her into a mirror. He then learns that she was in a test of her own: should Rigg save her, he would use the photos of her to sentence her for her crimes. Leaving, he discovers two keys; one which will "Save a life" and one that "Will take it away."

The police raid Rigg's home, discovering Brenda dead from her injuries. Discovering pictures of Detective Matthews, Strahm and Perez deduce that Matthews is alive. Further evidence leads them to interrogate Jill Tuck, Jigsaw's ex-wife.

Rigg enters the Alexander Motel and uses one of the keys to open a door to a room. Rigg finds a box with large strands of hair hanging out. Fearing it is his wife's head, Rigg discovers the infamous Pig mask, a microcassette recorder and a picture of the hotel clerk, Ivan. Rigg is instructed to wear the mask and abduct him and force him into a room with FEEL WHAT I FEEL scrawled on a door. After doing so successfully, Rigg forces him through the door, revealing several pictures, revealing Ivan to be a serial rapist. Rigg then follows instructions on a second tape and forces Ivan into a vice. Rigg, disgusted, leaves and plays a tape recorder, explaining to Ivan that he must blind himself with two scythe-like arms (which will deactivate the rest of the device) to survive, punishment for being a voyeur. Ivan manages to blind his right eye but fails to blind his other and the device activates, ripping his arms and legs from his torso, punishment for using his body as a tool to cause harm.

Reading a note saying, "Become the teacher; Go back to where it all began," a flashback reveals Rigg before becoming a SWAT officer. A man accused of abusing his wife and daughter is forced to be let go due to lack of evidence and a confession. Afterwards, Rigg brutally attacks him but his career is saved by Hoffman, who claims the man struck first.

Rigg later enters the school where the event took place (the same school where Troy was killed in Saw III). Entering a room, he discovers a wall reading SAVE AS I SAVE, the husband dead and the wife alive. A flashback reveals her being instructed that, in order for her to survive, she must pull multiple spikes out of her and her abusive husband. However, removing them will kill him in the process, as they block his major arteries. Rigg is told that he must leave her to save herself and the key to saving Detective Matthews is "Just off the map." Rigg removes the final spike from the wife and discovers a photo, saying "Go home.", bearing the same "G" font as one of Ivan's shackles and Brenda's knife. Rigg gives the wife a key and leaves, pulling a fire alarm as he does.

As the police investigate the test, it is discovered by agent Perez that all the victims were defended by a man named Art Blank, who is also Jill Tuck's lawyer. An accident then occurs that causes a harpoon gun to misfire and kill a forensic photographer. Disgusted, Strahm and Perez investigate the school more. Entering an office, they discover Billy, surrounded by candles and wearing a tape recorder. As it plays, Perez in informed that "Agent Strahm will soon take the life of an innocent man" and "[her] next step is critical." The puppet's eyes begin moving. Perez leans forward to investigate a ticking sound. The puppet's face then explodes, sending shrapnel into her face. She is rushed to the hospital in critical condition.

it, causing her to miscarry. Later, John was diagnosed with cancer and attempted a failed suicide. Later, after Jill had healed and visited John with Art Blank, he merely told them to leave. Later, Jill visited and discovered Cecil's picture. A second flashback (within the flashback) shows John abducting Cecil and putting him in a chair with several blades that he would have to put his face through to save himself. Cecil nearly managed to, but the chair collapsed. Cecil then lunged at John, but slipped in his own blood and fell into a pit of conveniently-placed razor wire. John observed and began to sketch the result. John then told her never to return. Strahm, while leaving, discovers the clues lead to the Gideon Meat factory.

Rigg is already there and Strahm follows, accidentally following Jeff from Saw III, thus revealing the current events are happening at the same time as Saw III. Rigg discovers another door leading to his final test. Behind it are Art Blank (the lawyer mentioned earlier), Eric Matthews and Hoffman, who are on a weighted scale. It was revealed earlier that if the door is opened before the 90 minutes are complete, Matthews' head will be crushed between two massive ice blocks and the runoff water from the ice block he stands on will hit an electrode which will kill Hoffman. Matthews was also given a revolver with one bullet to prevent Rigg from entering.

Rigg charges through the door, despite being shot by Matthews, at 00:01, causing the still-activated trap to kill Matthews and Hoffman. Rigg shoots a screaming Art in the chest. Meanwhile, Strahm discovers the door to Jigsaw's operation room in Saw III. Using a key given to him earlier, he enters and finds Jeff, having killed Amanda and Jigsaw. Jeff screams in a mental state, obsessed with finding his daughter. Strahm kills him in defense. In the final test room, Rigg and Art argue and Rigg kills Art after he reaches for a tape recorder, believing it to be a weapon. As the tape plays, Rigg is told that, had he allowed time to run out, Matthews and Hoffman would still be alive. As it ends, Hoffman stands and it is now revealed Hoffman is the new apprentice, having lifted Kerry into the harness and written a note to Amanda. Hoffman then leaves Rigg to die, stating, "Game over." Hoffman then enters the first room and, before Strahm can react, slams the door shut, sealing him with the bodies of Jeff, Amanda, Lynn and Jigsaw.

The film then cuts to the autopsy at the beginning of the film, revealing it had actually happened after the events of the film. Then, the tape that is found in Jigsaw's stomach in the autopsy, says that he will not let Hoffman walk out the door (as he did when he left Rigg and the others dying) without being tested.
