The Lord of the Rings - The Characters

The Hobbits of Middle Earth
Bilbo Baggins

Bilbo Baggins is Frodo's adopted guardian (meaning that Bilbo adopted Frodo as his heir, not that Frodo adopted Bilbo as his guardian). In the Hobbit (Bilbo's journey before Frodo's), Bilbo goes on an adventure with Gandalf the Grey and 13 dwarves to regain the huge and precious treasure of Thorin's ancestors. Along the way, when the dwarves are captured by Goblins, Gandalf is away, and poor Bilbo is all alone in the dark. When done in the roots of the mountain, he luckily (or was it fate?) falls upon a golden ring. From there to the second chapter in the Lord of the Rings, it remained unimportant.

Here, we discover how important that ring really is.

Frodo Baggins

Frodo Baggins is the Bilbo's adopted heir and Ring-bearer of the One Ring.
He originally sets out on a journey to Rivendell, where Gandalf thinks it will be kept safe. But, when he, Strider, Merry (Meriadoc), and Pippen (Peregrin) finally reach Rivendell, Elrond tells them that the Elves cannot keep the Ring safe from Sauron's clutches. They then hold a secret counsel in which Men, Dwarves, Elves, Wizards and Hobbits decide who shall take the ring to Mount Doom; a mountain in the land of Mordor; the Dark Lord's realm, the only place where the Ring can be un-made.
Frodo offers to take the ring to Mount Doom, along with eight companions and there his journey begins. Ever since he can remember, Frodo has always wanted an adventure like his Uncle Bilbo, but when he finally gets his own, he realizes that his is much different.

Frodo Baggins is one of the most heroic in the Lord of the Rings, and he shows just how much a small Hobbit can do.

Merry (Meriadoc) Brandybuck

Merry is one of Frodo's closest friend. He's a loyal companion, he's very cunning (as a lot of hobbits are), and Merry likes his pipe (as most hobbits do). Merry may not seem like much, being about 3 feet tall with a head of curly hair, but if you ever pick on his friends, he'll whip out his sword and slice out your innards.

Merry is humorous, and he knows what is right.

Pippen (Peregrin) Took

Pippen is by far one of the most hilarious characters in both the books and the movies. He has an un-intelligent way of speaking--asking stupid questions for example--and tends to think that the quest to Mount Doom will be a comfortable, exciting journey. Indeed, its exciting, but far from comfortable. Especially for him and his pal, Merry.

While everything seems hopeless and lost, the hobbits (especially Pippen) are able to crack a smile anytime with their oblivion. If nothing else, one good reason to bring a hobbit along is in case you are longing for food and comfort from your family or home, you can always count on a hobbit to be 10x more miserable then you.

Samwise (Sam) Gamgee

Sam Gamgee is one of the most heroic characters in the film and in the book. You can alwats count on him to save you from the giant spider or to bring some Shire salts for a roast chicken while you're journeying to Mordor to destroy a Ring before the world ends. For a hobbit, he's quite good with fighting off evil. Either by is eternally pure spirit and heart or by a frying pan. Sam is very oblivious in some aspects, he's not stupid, but he just doesn't know fully what's going on or how serious it is. He acts like a balm to a burn you have. He's innocently pure. And I think that is why Sam is such a lovable character in both the film and the novel.

Aragon Elessar

Aragorn is known as many things in the Lord of the Rings. Longshanks by the men of Bree, Thorongil by the men of Gondor and Rohan, Isildur's heir as a poetic description and many more. Raised by the elves of Elrond's house, he is very close to him and his two twin sons. He knows the ways and the words of the elves and have taken them for his own. He is the last chieftain of the Dunedain, the race of people descended from Numenor, the ancient kingdom of Elendil. They are gifted with long life and good health. As described above, Aragorn is of Elendil's blood-line, father of Isildur who cut the ring from Sauron's mighty hand with the shards of Narsil, his father's broken blade.

Aragorn is very righteous, and though he can have a sense of humour he tends to look and act more on the solemn, factual, practical side of his brain much more often.

He was born to be a king. But the greatest thing on his mind is: Will he befall the same short and cruel death as so many of his line have been given? Will the same weakness in their blood and his blood act on what it has done in the past? There's only one way to find that out.
